Loading a Hive into HKEY_USERS
The registry stores the configuration information for programs and users. By default only the information on active users will appear in the registry editor. But you can manually load the information on other users in order to make changes.Usually, the easiest way to start the Registry Editor is to launch it from the Start-Run dialog box. Simply type REGEDT32 and press Enter. There is no need to enter the directory path because the directory is automatically in the environment variables.

  1. Highlight HKEY_USERS and then select Load Hive from the Registry menu.
  2. Browse to their profile directory and select NTuser.dat or if you are editing a mandatory profile the file will be called ntuser.man
  3. When prompted for Key Name, input their Username. The editor will insert the user’s Registry data into HKEY_USERS under the user’s name.
  4. Make your changes to the registry located under this new key.
  5. After you are finished making all of the registry changes, highlight key corresponding to the username and select the Unload Hive option from the Registry menu.

The Load Hive command only works on HKEY_USERS and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.

  1. Log on to the profiles server with administrative permissions and Full Control permission to the \TstProf profile folder on the Netlogon share.
  2. Select Run from the Start menu.
  3. Enter Regedt32 and select OK.
  4. Select Load Hive from the Registry menu.
  5. Navigate to the \\IBSNT04\Netlogon\TstProf folder (or the folder holding the profile that you wish to amend).
  6. Choose the NTuser.xxx (.dat or .man) file, and select Open to display the Load Hive dialog box. The Key Name being asked for is a unique name that you can use to distinguish it as the loaded hive. This is important because the hive needs to be unloaded after the changes are made.
  7. Enter a unique key name. For this example, enter TestLoad.
  8. Select Open. The TestLoad hive is added to the currently selected registry hive. This hive contains the settings from the NTuser.xxx file.
  9. Select the root of the TestLoad registry hive or the hive that you have loaded.
  10. Select Permissions from the Security menu.
  11. Change the permissions to match your requirements.
  12. Select OK to confirm the changes.
  13. Select the root of the TestLoad hive.
  14. Select Unload Hive from the Registry menu to unload the hive and save the settings to the original NTuser.xxx file
